Libby Brown of BC Emergency Health Services says two vehicles travelling south on the highway hit the tree in the early evening.
Whistler RCMP, Whistler Fire Rescue Service and the B.C. Ambulance Service attended the scene.
The other driver was taken to hospital but is expected to survive.
It’s unclear if weather and road conditions contributed to the crash.
RCMP are asking any witnesses to the crash to call Sea-to-Sky Traffic Services at 604-892-6100. It is not known when the road will reopen.
The route will closed to traffic in both directions until at least 3 p.m.

The shut down comes after the highway was closed on Wednesday night for several hours after a tree fell across it, sending several passengers to hospital with minor injuries.
