Taxation of legalized pot won’t be a government cash cow, Trudeau says
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Mayor Gregor Robertson today at Vancouver City Hall in a historic move – he’s the first Prime Minister to visit city hall since his father, Pierre Trudeau, did in 1973.

For his part, Mayor Robertson said it will be a relief to have the burden of marijuana regulation taken off the city’s shoulders, especially with the number of dispensaries that have sprung up around Vancouver in recent years.
The mayor, who held an umbrella to shield Trudeau from the elements as he paused for a few selfies, praised the new prime minister for paying attention to cities.
In their brief closed-door meeting in the old ceremonial mayor’s office, Trudeau and Robertson touched on all the key issues between them; transit, housing, the environment, cultural investments like the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Kitsilano Coast Guard station and Syrian refugees.
Trudeau said his own priorities “resonate and are similar to the priorities the people of Vancouver have put forward”, which may explain why he chose Vancouver for his first city hall visit as prime minister. The Prime Minister told Maclean’s that due to the rapid fire format of the questions, he felt that choosing one Baltic state over another could cause problems and tried to answer the question diplomatically.
Asked whether he would request the Pope apologize for the church’s role, Trudeau said he plans to have a “constructive engagement” with Francis on the matter. Trudeau said generalizing about Muslims “is not just ignorant, it’s irresponsible”.
Robertson, when asked about transit funding, said the transit system is in urgent need of improvement and a new system of funding needs to be established.

Canada’s government sounded another note of opposition to a proposed oil pipeline in the country’s west coast, though he appeared to leave the door open to allowing proponents to acquire the needed local approval for projects to go ahead. “People are being passed up by buses, the transit service is not good enough, the traffic congestion is too much, and we need that investment to happen urgently and improve the situation here for people getting around the region”.
