Officer’s mistrial in Gray’s death a letdown for both sides

Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams declared a mistrial Wednesday after jurors made it clear they were hopelessly deadlocked over whether Officer William Porter had committed any crimes due to actions he didn’t take prior to Gray’s death.

Gray sustained a spinal cord injury while riding in the police van in April. He said he felt confident that Porter will be convicted in a future trial.

“We call on state’s attorney Mosby to move quickly to retry Porter”, said Michaela Brown, communications coordinator of Baltimore Bloc, as reported by The Guardian.

During her closing argument, state prosecutor Janice Bledsoe alleged that Officer Porter had “abused his power” and “failed in his responsibility” to protect Gray from harm. He was shackled and placed in a van, but officers did not restrain him with a seat belt.

Meanwhile, other juries will soon consider whether the department’s dysfunctions justify saving Porter’s fellow officers from jail.

The mistrial “leaves the state in a hard position”, Jaros said. There is no statutory maximum sentence for the fourth charge, misconduct.
