S.C. representative fights anti-abortion laws with Viagra

While she knows the measure will never be passed, McLeod told local news that she devised the legislation “to make it as invasive, as intrusive, as hypocritical and unnecessary as possible to make the point”.

A SC lawmaker is introducing a bill that would require men looking to get Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs to go through similar steps as women seeking abortions. McLeod’s motivation behind the proposal is frustration with anti-abortion bills, which similarly create hurdles for woman who want to undergo the procedure.

Men would also have to wait 24 hours before getting the drugs under the proposed bill.

Under the proposed law, men seeking the drug would need an affidavit from their sexual partner, verifying an experience of erectile dysfunction within the last 90 days.

Be examined by a state-licensed sexual therapist to make sure his ED isn’t “attributable exclusively to one or more psychological conditions”. The men will also be required to attend outpatient counseling within six months.

McLeod told WCBD that she doesn’t expect the bill to pass, but wants to use it as an opportunity to highlight how hard it is for women to get an abortion in SC. That means waiting time between the moment of prescription and when they actually obtain it. The requirement is meant to mirror the same waiting time for women in clinics around SC to get an abortion. The new bill mimics the current restrictions of the state on abortion. The South Carolina state representative stated that she has absolutely no expectations that the bill will pass. One of the reasons would be that “we’re in a male-dominated legislature”, and, of course, the fact that it was not truly the objective.
