Foreign experts attend study of Russian jet’s black box

The black box from the Russian Su-24 fighter-bomber downed by Turkey has been damaged, said Nikolai Primak, head of the Defense Ministry incident investigation group, at a briefing where the box was opened, the Interfax news agency reported Friday.

Officials said experts would try to analyse its contents over the weekend with the aid of special equipment before presenting their findings on Monday.

Ankara says it used force in response to a 17-second violation of its airspace and was fully justified in doing so. Russian Federation insists that the plane never entered Turkish airspace.

Envoys to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation approved the plan and must now decide what military assets to send to Turkey, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told Reuters, stressing that it was a defensive measure.

Spain has also agreed to extend its Patriot surface-to-air missiles along Turkey’s border to shoot down any missiles from Syria’s conflict fired into Turkish territory.
