Estes students score well on PARCC test
The Mississippi Department of Education released the results Thursday of state tests taken by third- to eighth-grade students in math and language last school year.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Broke Box Office Records Last Night
While spoilers will not be given out, the film was full of surprises while paying homage to both trilogies that came before it. Greenfield said the success of “Force Awakens” would not be enough to offset the impact of subscriber losses at ESPN.
“I do think parents understand the dilemma the teachers were facing”, Ballard said.
House Approves .1 Trillion Spending Bill
The deal marks a major achievement for new Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who delivered 150 Republican votes for the spending bill. Under a plan worked out in bipartisan negotiations, the legislation would be combined and voted on in the Senate the same day.
The results from the PARCC exam are in and they’re consistent with the low expectations the state’s schools Superintendent Tony Smith anticipated back in September, when, in a letter to school administrators, he cautioned against using the “results to shame teachers or schools”.
DNC Sanctions Sanders Campaign For Accessing Clinton’s Voter Data
Bernie Sanders has filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking to regain access to a Democratic National Committee voter database. We will continue to work with and report to the DNC regarding this issue to ensure that this isolated incident does not recur.
Too many IL public school students go through school without gaining the requisite knowledge and skills, by the time they graduate, that are needed for careers and college.
Although MDE officials focused on the success of those students who reached Level 3 or higher, the results also showed that tens of thousands of MS students have had difficulty meeting the new, tougher standards. Level 4 corresponds to a ranking of strong understanding.
Because exams are cumulative, students must recall information from the beginning of the school year, explained Jennifer Wennell, a Spanish teacher at Manchester Valley.
“The district will be accredited going forward to some extent by how our kids do on these tests”, Welsh said. Even with our robust technology infrastructure, we had a number of instances where students were bumped out of the testing portal without a known cause.
During her superintendent’s report, Dr. Jan DeLay spoke about how the district plans to share PARCC results with parents. In fifth-grade math, 47 percent of students scored in the highest levels and in third-grade language arts, 46.5 percent of students scored a level 4 or 5.
“In the next several months, we as a district will undertake an effort to learn what we can in the first year PARCC results”, Fetherman said.
“We’re always told Mississippi’s 50th”, Smith said.
“The new tests measure different things, such as a student’s ability to think critically and problem solve …” she writes in part.
There is criticism over the length of time it took educators to receive the results and, rightly so, educators want the results from yearly assessments as early as possible to adjust teaching and planning.
Rigel also said it was nice having some meaningful test scores to use. “We’ve already started to leverage these data to develop new approaches to ensure we can improve student achievement”, said Linda Chen, BCPS’ chief academic officer, in a statement.
“There is a lot of testing going on”, said Andrew Boone, 16, a junior at Manchester Valley High. But just 37 percent of high school students took the English and language arts exam and only 43 percent took the math exam.
The lower grades didn’t do as well, with third through seventh graders all scoring below average. In eighth-grade math, 28.3 percent scored in the top two levels. Teachers at the high school confirm that the students did not do their best work, Carochi said. Level one indicates that a student is not meeting grade level expectations while levels four and five denote that students are meeting or exceeding grade level standards.

“They showed up to take it, but they didn’t really take it”, he said, identifying a “passive-aggressive” response where the test was concerned. — The overall scores were relatively good for the district.
