By refusing the Sanders camp access to the database, the DNC is essentially holding the entire Democratic voter base hostage.
Beyond simply reviewing the data, the logs show the Sanders staffers took deliberate steps to harvest and store the information.
Uretsky, the Sanders staffer who was sacked, told CNN Friday morning that he was trying to “understand how badly the Sanders campaign’s data was exposed” and he was not trying to access Clinton voter data.
“The Sanders campaign doesn’t have anything other than bluster to put out there…they not only viewed [Clinton’s information], but they exported it and downloaded it”.
The union said the Vermont senator, running to be the Democratic candidate for president against former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley, would be a candidate who would “break with politics-as-usual and fight for America’s working people…”
Wasserman Schultz said the DNC had asked the Sanders campaign for a “full accounting of whether or not this information was used and the way in which it was disposed”.
Speaking to the press, Sanders’ campaign manager Jeff Weaver admitted that a campaign worker accessed Clinton voter files on Wednesday, due to a brief software glitch.
“At that time our campaign did not run to the media, relying instead on assurances from the vendor that the problem would be resolved”, Weaver said.
“On more than on occasion, they have dropped the firewall between the data of competing Democratic campaigns”, Weaver said. “We don’t need dirty tricks”.
The Sanders campaign will remain suspended until it provides the DNC with a full explanation of the episode and provides proof that any accessed data has been discarded.
The Sanders campaign fired one staff member, Data Director Josh Uresky, but blamed NGP VAN, the vendor that runs the DNC’s voter database, for making “serious errors”.
Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon said there was a misperception that the DNC’s suspension was “punishment” for the Sanders campaign.
Sanders’ lawsuit said voter data is critical to the campaign “but it is especially critical to the Campaign, which has been financed primarily with contributions from individual donors rather than Political Action Committees (“PACs”)”.
Maintaining the centralized voter file is one of the chief responsibilities of national party committees, so the breach and its fallout could also deal a blow to the DNC itself. But Weaver said the campaign “in an official capacity” does not possess or want any data from another campaign.
There’s no question that being locked out of the voter files is a major short-term hurdle for the Sanders campaign.
Sanders supporters said the DNC decision should be reversed.

DNC spokesman Luis Miranda said Friday the party had instructed NGP VAN to conduct an analysis of any users who accessed the data and report back its findings.
