Vatican set to canonise Mother Teresa

Pope Francis has cleared the way for her sainthood by approving a decree recognising a miracle attributed to her intercession with God.

Her missionary order in Kolkata – formerly known as Calcutta – said it was “thrilled” and grateful to the Pope.

Mother Teresa who died on September 5, 1997, aged 87 had also faced criticism for the methods adopted in providing health care and also for her rejection of contraception and medicine. She established Missionaries of Charity to serve the poorest of all.

Mother Teresa was well-respected for her courageous and forthright views against abortion. “We are not able to understand Him”, she said as she went about supervising the rescue operation.
