Fiat Chrysler recalling nearly 56K Jeeps to fix water leak
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles today recalled 55,687 Jeep Cherokee SUVs for a problem with power liftgate components that could lead to a fire. That shield doesn’t fully keep water from reaching the module, and as a result, it can cause a short circuit – and potentially, a fire.

The plastic shield had been installed to protect the module from pooling water in the spare tire area, but Chrysler later found the only real fix was to install a water shield that completely covers the liftgate module. The company in June recalled 164,000 units after experiencing power liftgate failure due to water intrusion around the control module.
Owners can contact FCA customer service directly at 1-800-853-1403. Alternately, you can contact NHTSA directly at 888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign #15V826000.
Shields used for vehicles produced after February 18, 2015, functioned as a moisture barrier for the bottom sections of liftgate control modules.
The automaker issued the recall after an investigation into two complaints. The automaker says the new water shield provides 360-degree protection that prevents water from affecting the module.
FCA US is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

An estimated 10,138 customers are affected in Canada, along with an estimated 924 in Mexico and 11,841 outside the NAFTA region. All recall-related work will be performed free of charge.
