The Force Awakens, the latest instalment in the Hollywood blockbuster franchise, took a massive €836,845 in one day alone. No analysts are predicting the number may be in jeopardy of being too low.
Critics applauded “Force Awakens”, which features newcomers Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac alongside original stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.
All the experts in this sort of thing are expecting the movie to fetch somewhere around $250M – $315M in the US domestic opening and it could possibly top Jurassic World’s worldwide debut record of $524.9M.
The Walt Disney Co.’s estimate on Friday easily surpassed the previous Thursday night record of $43.5 million by 2011’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”.
According to Cineplex Entertainment vice-president Pat Marshall, most shows at the Cineplex Lansdowne location are sold out through the weekend.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” premieres in theaters on Thursday night and fans have been lining up for days at the Uptown Theater in Northwest, D.C. awaiting opening night.
The Death Star-sized Thursday night in the USA should also help to boost the film’s outlook for a record breaking opening weekend as well. Disney’s carefully planned release of film trailers and tidbits of information over several months also boosted ticket sales, he said.
Of that $57-million, almost half came from 3-D screenings, and roughly 10-percent came from IMAX screenings. Pre-sales for the movie hit a staggering $100 million.
“I’ve loved “Star Wars” since I was a kid”. Now, the franchise’s new owner is looking for a return on its investment.
Such a positive reaction for “The Force Awakens” may attract the kind of repeat viewings that made James Cameron’s “Avatar” and “Titanic” the highest grossing films of all time.
