Koeman eager to avoid Southampton falling into relegation battle

“Southampton have not defeated Spurs since 2005 and punters may decide to use their free bet on Mauricio Pochettino grabbing all three points against his former team”.

Spurs enjoyed an excellent start to the season but saw their 14-game unbeaten run end in dramatic fashion as Newcastle United left White Hart Lane with a 2-1 win last Sunday.

Three of their next four fixtures over the festive period are away from home as they look to stay within touching distance of the Champions League places.

Saints have taken just one point from their last four games to slip to 12th in the table.

Seven points is the gap to Norwich City in 18th and if their form does not improve the 1976 FA Cup winners could continue falling towards the relegation zone.

Southampton will still be without Maarten Stekelenburg, Fraser Forster, Florin Gardos and Jay Rodriguez. Clinton Njie is out with a knee problem, while Ryan Mason and Alex Pritchard both remain unavailable due to ankle injuries.

Christian Eriksen: The Danish worldwide has scored three goals in his last three games against Southampton and will be hoping to add to that tally at St Marys.

Southampton have fired in the most open play crosses (309) and have had the most headed shots (51) in the Premier League this season.

Steven Davis has created the most goalscoring chances without having assisted a goal in the Premier League this season (28 chances created, 0 assists).

Merson told Sky Sports: “Losing to Newcastle was Tottenham all over”.

Southampton are in poor form.

Southampton were disappointing in last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace and the home fans will be expecting a much better display against Spurs here.

Having lost four and won none of the last five matches in all competitions, the Saints are priced at 13/8 (2.62) to come out on top here.

“They haven’t got the results they would have wanted in the last couple of games but they are doing well”, he added.
