Marquez bought two semi-automatic rifles while he and Farook planned their attacks. They then planned to leave the college and set up a secondary attack along the 91 freeway-the secondary attack would be a firearm-based attack and would be one that armed citizens could foil.
Marquez attended Riverside from the fall of 2009 to the winter term of 2011, while Farook was registered as a student there from 2004 to 2010, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Marquez, who had worked as a security guard at Walmart, appeared in court and was told to return on Monday for a bail hearing. If convicted of all three counts, he could face up to 35 years in federal prison.

The FBI said Marquez signed a statement each day waiving his right to a lawyer. They found that the official who reviewed Malik’s application asked for more evidence that she had met her fiancé but it was never provided. After that year, prosecutors said, Marquez distanced himself from Farook and ceased plotting with him. Apparently it was a marriage of convenience, and a sham in order to get the woman in question American citizenship. He was to meet with some of the families of the victims, officials said. Marquez also said he no longer wanted Farook as a friend.
