‘Force Awakens’ crosses $250 million globally after record Friday

Star Wars The Force Awakens box office collections: The movie already smashed several film industry records and won praise from critics and moviegoers. That surpassed the previous opening-day record of $US43.5 million for the final Harry Potter movie in 2011. The seventh movie in the celebrated sci-fi franchise is projected to sell close to $220 million worth of tickets in the United States and Canada through Sunday, beating the record $208.8 million for “Jurassic World” in June, Disney said.

Get ready for an influx of Star Wars box office reports, because Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been breaking records since pre-sale tickets went online, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. Although it was based on a popular Disney theme park attraction, featured a hot director in Brad Bird, boasted a Memorial Day Weekend release date and A-list star George Clooney, the film was still an original story that was not based on an established source material.

Early estimates from the company also indicated that it had raked in $130 million worldwide since the film first hit some theaters on Wednesday internationally.
