Van Gaal: Forget Man United of ten years ago
The Republic of Ireland global lined up for the Cherries in their 2-1 victory against Louis van Gaal’s injury-hit United on Saturday evening, despite he and his partner losing their baby at birth earlier in the week.

“It’s a matter of belief, if you believe in the manager or not”, said the Dutchman, who said Friday that United had to get used to no longer being one of Europe’s superpowers after its elimination from the Champions League this week.
Despite the defeat to Bournemouth, Van Gaal insisted United can still go on and lift the title. “They would consider themselves in a very good position to win the league this season”.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was left reflecting on the toughest week of his 18 months in charge after England’s richest club suffered a shocking Premier League defeat at humble Bournemouth on Saturday.
“We’ve looked at the last few games as turning points, I think the Everton game, Swansea game for a start”, said Howe. It’s not for me to get involved really, I’m just about getting back to work really and working hard this week and we’re focussed on next week to get back to winning games.
“For the fans it shall be like that”.
We might see a reaction from the United players but Van Gaal is not going to change anything about United’s style of play. It is not as easy as everybody thinks. There is no other league that is happens as often as it does in the Premier League. But you have to analyse the club now. There has been an evolution in European football. “I didn’t hear anything positive said of Guillermo Varela or Campbell Borthwick-Jackson”, he said. But then we won the title.
“The support of everyone at the club is why I felt like I wanted to play as well”. Still we could hurt the number two of Germany.
He continued: “I thought in the first half we played well, we created chances, scored a goal and I had the feeling that we could win in the second half”.
Carrick also defended the performance of the inexperienced players and said blaming their run of form on injuries is not something he wants to do.
I have read that I am 64 and I am too old. He’s got to get back to the level where he was a year, two years ago. I don’t think it is [completely] like that – I can make the difference, in tactics and everything.

When asked whether he had doubted himself following the loss in Germany, Van Gaal replied: “No, I don’t have any doubts”.
