SC made it official on Monday, as the school’s Board of Trustees agreed to hire Will Muschamp as the Gamecocks’ new football coach.

Muschamp said Spurrier, another ex-Gator coach, had raised the level of expectations for the Gamecocks to compete for championships.

Muschamp’s job is now two-fold as he begins his tenure with SC: hiring an assistant coaching staff and stabilizing and flipping new recruits.

Robinson, widely regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiters, coached defensive backs at Florida from 2011-14 and at Auburn this season.

Johnson spent four season with the Gamecocks serving as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach before spending one season as head coach at Southern Miss.

Gamecocks AD Ray Tanner dropped a number of stats up at the podium Monday morning to convince everyone in the room that Will Muschamp is the right man to lead the university’s football program. He then served as DC and head coach in waiting at Texas for 2008-10, but Florida came and scooped him up to replace Urban Meyer before Mack Brown retired in Austin.

“I hate that those kids have to go through another change at defensive coordinator”, Muschamp said. “He is a legendary high school coach in SC who won multiple state titles”. Johnson and his family moved back to Columbia when he left Auburn.

Bentley spent two seasons at Auburn as offensive analyst prior to opting to join Muschamp at USC.

Muschamp’s contract pays him $3 million in the first year, increases each year after by $100,000 and contains a variety of incentives.

In the event Muschamp terminates the contract, his buyout is $7 million for 2016, $6 million for 2017 and the figure drops by $1 million for each remaining year of the deal.

Georgia’s decision to fire Mark Richt… will be one that they regret for a long time. “And if you want to be fast and furious, that’s where we’re going”, Tanner said.

Spurrier announced his retirement in October after a 2-4 start to give SC time to take a long view on filling his position.
