Former President Jimmy Carter says that his most recent brain scan showed no signs of cancer. “I will continue to receive regular three-week immunotherapy treatments of pembrolizumab”, Carter said in a statement.
The 91-year-old Nobel Peace Laureate and global humanitarian recently had a tumour removed from his liver, only to find four melanoma spots on his brain. In November, doctors Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta had stated that Carter’s treatments were going well and that the cancer had not spread no more. With old-line chemotherapeutic agents, a patient’s cancer often develops resistance against treatment.

However, the immune system has a harder time identifying cancer cells as foreign, sometimes due to the fact that they don’t appear different enough from normal cells or the immune system isn’t powerful enough to take on the cancer. It was among the first immunotherapy cancer medications to be approved by the FDA previous year. Carter’s grandson James Carter confirmed the good news as well.
