Star Wars’ New Zealand distributor, Sony Pictures, revealed the figures on Friday, saying they had smashed the previous record, set by The Avengers, which opened on April 25 2012, and collected $1.020m on its first day in cinemas.
For some rabid fans, “Star Wars” is not just a couple of hours in a fantasy world – it’s part of their everyday reality.
“The Force Awakens” follows on from 1983’s “Return of the Jedi”, with franchise veterans Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill reprising their roles as Han Solo, Leia and Luke Skywalker respectively.
“That’s going to be our holiday treat”, said DeVega, of Hyde Park.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” reaped a record-breaking $57 million in USA and Canadian ticket sales on its opening night, propelled by critical praise and the fervor of fans eager to see the celebrated film franchise’s first installment in a decade. We don’t actually see Kylo or Hux escape before the base is destroyed – it’s merely implied that they get away.
“Its a new Star Wars movie that’s all I need to know”.
Fans buzzed around the Turkey Creek theater, anxiously awaiting its first screening, which began at 7 p.m., and other showings that continued into the night with a new one starting every 15 to 30 minutes either on IMAX, RPX, 3D or standard screens.
“People love it. It’s spanned generations”, Bornhoeft said.
While Weis said he read some reviews of the film, other fans told the Tribune they have been avoiding the Internet and social media for days so they wouldn’t accidentally stumble upon movie spoilers.
She said: “It’s something so incredible that I can’t even describe”.
London, Ky., resident John Bublitz says he had the second-largest “Star Wars” collection in Tennessee when he lived in Knoxville. I cried when I watched the teaser, and that was earlier this year.

“I think it was a simpler time where something that wonderful was more special because you didn’t see things like that that much”, Michael Meglow said, remembering as a kid being spellbound by the original.
