Police said 10 people became involved in a fight.

Police say one person pulled out a handgun and fired at least one round.

DeSpain also said that a mall employee’s leg was hit by a bullet that had ricocheted, though the worker was unscathed.

Officials say East Towne Mall is closed while they process the scene.

Madison police say that the immediate area where the shooting took place will be cordoned off for a while because of the investigation.

Police department spokesman Joel DeSpain said the shooting was not related to terrorism and was not an “active shooter” scenario, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

A message on the shopping center’s website said the mall was “temporarily closed due to a safety concern”, but the mall was reopened at about 6:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. ET).

“It lasted like 3-4 seconds until the gun went off”, he wrote.

“Initially I was thinking this might not be an isolated incident, that this might be larger, which is terrifying… because of what we’ve been seeing on the news”, she said.
