National Herald Case ‘Driven’ By PM’s Office, Rahul Gandhi Says

For the BJP, the immediate problem will be the future of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill since the Congress is bound to use the charge of being a victim of political vendetta to stall parliament. “They (BJP) want that Rahulji shouldn’t attend Parliament and grill them on issues concerning the common man and that is why they are resorting to such tactics”, said a senior Congress leader as screams of tanashahi nahi chalegi echoed across the Parliament hall.

The escalation of confrontation between the Congress and the government over “political vendetta”, following decision of a court to summon its leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on a complaint of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, appears to have caused uncertainty on the fate of the crucial GST bill.

“Everyone is equal before the law and nobody in the country is allowed privileges; the Gandhis should realise that”.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reached out to the country’s main opposition party chief Sonia Gandhi, greeting her on the 69th birthday.

As it is, the Congress has found a supporter in Mamata Banerjee even if she is playing her own game of keeping the Congress away from a possible alliance with the Left in West Bengal before next year’s assembly elections. We will see at the end what comes out.

Sources said that the ministers were unanimous in seeking a robust counter to the campaign of Congress which has attributed political motive behind the case.

The two houses faced repeated disruptions, and were eventually adjourned for the day, as Congress members protested “political vendetta”.

Detailing the issues involved, he said a Criminal Court had taken cognisance of the offence and the High Court agreed with the Trial Court. “Why then disturb the Parliament and prevent the legislative activity from continuing?”, he said. When asked about the case, Sonia Gandhi told reporters, “I am the daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi. Why paralyse parliament for it”, the finance minister said questioning Congress’ continuous agitation in both house of Parliament over National Herald case. However, the fact is that this danger is coming from none other than the Congress Party.

The National Herald case might dent – if not undo – that, damage her image and reduce her stature, something the party and its leaders will go all-out to prevent.

Second, by suggesting that the PMO is responsible for a ruling which was passed by a court, Rahul has not only questioned the independence of judiciary, he has also made way for the charge that Congress may have tried to influence the judiciary when it was in power.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a Congress spokesman and a lawyer representing the Gandhis said they were willing to appear at court, but sought more time.
