Midnight screenings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Thursday morning accounted for £2.4m of ticket sales.
With $100 million in the bank, the next question is whether The Force Awakens can be the biggest movie opening weekend of all time, passing Jurassic World last June at $208.8 million.
The movie beat out “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” for the most money earned on opening night. According to Box Office Mojo, that would break the single-day, opening-day and Friday box office records simultaneously.
The Force Awakens opened in 12 worldwide markets on Wednesday and expanded to 32 others on Thursday.
The story of The Force Awakens takes place 30 years after the events of Return Of The Jedi, though specific plot details are being kept tightly under wraps.
“The Force Awakens” has already set a new record for Thursday night previews with an estimated $57 million from showings that began at about 7 p.m. Thursday.
Describing it as a movie for “Star Wars” fans and non-fans alike, Kevin said director J.J. Abrams did a good job of making a new film while paying homage to the classics.
“The Force Awakens”, directed by J.J. The movie characters will greet children of Gold Star families who are attending a special screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens later today at the White House Family Theater.
We’ll have more updates on The Force Awaken’s box office ascension as the news breaks. But at a recent marathon screening of all six “Star Wars” movies, the screening of the three prequel films were met with mostly silence, with occasional chuckles at a particularly cheesy line.

But movie studio Walt Disney Co says millions of tickets are still available to see the film – which unites the cast from the original trilogy with newcomers – as theaters add capacity to meet demand.
