Hours after he sent Jose Mourinho packing, the Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has reached out to the club’s legend Didier Drogba, in an effort to get the Ivorian to return to his former club, according to reports.

“The rumour about Didier Drogba is unfounded”, Major League Soccer’s Impact posted on their official Twitter account.

Metro.co.uk, citing Jeune Afrique, reports that Abramovich has contacted Drogba over a potential position in Chelsea’s new backroom team. He said at the end of the campaign he expects to return.

After winning a fourth league title with Drogba in 2014-15, the club went into a tailspin.

With doubts over Diego Costa’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are also reportedly considering moves for two striker.

According to magazine Jeune Afrique, the club are looking to reinstate Drogba during the ongoing MLS off-season.

His excellent performances in MLS even triggered a media frenzy in the United Kingdom, as fans and media were suggesting to bring back Drogba to help Chelsea’s scoring drought and sub-par performances in the English Premier League. Losing him would seriously disrupt the club’s plans for 2016.
