Hillary Clinton sets sights on general election at Democratic Debate

Sanders’ campaign had staged a mini-rebellion over perceived favoritism on the part of the Democratic National Committee, which is part of a party establishment largely presumed to be in Clinton’s camp.

“I worry greatly that the rhetoric coming from the Republicans, particularly Donald Trump, is sending a message to Muslims here in the United States and literally around the world that there is a ‘clash of civilizations, ‘ that there is some kind of Western plot or even ‘war against Islam, ‘ which then I believe fans the flames of radicalization”. It was portayed as a potential turning point in the campaign, potentially multiplying Sanders’ supporters – or alienating them enough to keep them home in November if Sanders is not the nominee.

Bernie Sanders apologized to both Hillary Clinton and his own supporters for the actions of staff in a data breach that has roiled the Democratic campaign for president in the past 24 hours. It came as Clinton has solidified her standing atop the field, shaking off a rocky start and the controversy about her use of private email at the State Department.

“There are some people in (the DNC) who are clearly trying to help the Clinton campaign”, Sanders’ campaign manager Jeff Weaver said on MSNBC Friday. Clinton said her husband, former President Bill Clinton, would be an adviser on economic issues. “We must never surrender them to the fascist pleas of billionaires with big mouths”, O’Malley said. And at 52, O’Malley is a generation younger than Clinton and Sanders – something of which he reminded viewers.

Sanders said he anxious that Clinton is “too much into regime change and a little bit too aggressive without knowing what the unintended consequences might be”.

Clinton has often used Republicans as foils to make the case that she is the Democrat who would give the party its best chance of holding onto the White House.

“So whoever is part of the family of a president has an extraordinary privilege of not only having a front row seat on history, but making her or maybe his contribution”, said Clinton.

O’Malley chimes in with the moderator. “Secretary Clinton changes her position on this every election year, it seems”, said O’Malley, touting his record on gun control.

“I have said I want to be the president for the struggling, the striving and the successful”. “Even though this debate was held on the Saturday before Christmas, I think we talked to a lot of people”.

“We probably let our lust for regime toppling get ahead of the practical considerations for stability in that region”, O’Malley said.

The foreign policy focus has blunted Sanders’ momentum in the Democratic race.

“He is becoming ISIS’s best recruiter”, she said. “Now that I think we’ve resolved your data, we’ve agreed on an independent inquiry, we should move on”.

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said Clinton “did very well”.

But for now, Clinton appears to be well positioned to ease through the Democratic primary and take the fight to her preferred targets in the Republican Party.

Mr Saunders, however, argued that the U.S. should first concentrate on defeating the Islamic State (ISIS).
