A Lebanese militant notorious for the murder of three Israelis, including a four-year-old girl, has been killed in an Israeli air raid near the Syrian capital, his Hezbollah movement said.

In Lebanon Kantar is known as “the dean of Lebanese prisoners”, a reference to his long jail sentence. Kuntar’s brother mourned his death on Facebook, writing, “With pride we mourn the martyrdom of the leader Samir Kuntar and we are honored to join families of martyrs”. In 2008, Kuntar along with four other Hezbollah operatives was released in a prisoner exchange to return the bodies of Israeli soldiers Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, who were abducted by Hezbollah in a cross-border operation that sparked the Second Lebanon War. In 1985, four members of the PLF hijacked the Achille Lauro cruise ship sailing from Alexandria, Egypt to Ashdod, in southern Israel, in an attempt to gain negotiating power for Kuntar’s release. Other Israeli officials, including military spokesmen, declined to comment.

Kuntar was 16 in 1979 when he and three other militants entered Israel by boat from Lebanon.
“We have no idea who killed Samir Kuntar but whoever it was should be thanked by all of Israel”, said Avigdor Liberman, head of the opposition Yisrael Beitenu party and a member of parliament’s foreign affairs and defense committee. Hezbollah did not say which role Qantar played in the Syrian conflict, but Syrian state media said he was involved in a major offensive earlier this year in Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Israel has welcomed the killing of Kantar without taking credit.

His death in Syria late Saturday in the Al-Homsi district outside Damascus has received widespread media coverage in Israel, with several newspapers publishing articles posing the question as to when and how Hezbollah would retaliate.
