The site Box Office Mojo also claims it’s the first film to gross more than $100 million in a single day, while the film also looks to be on track to set a new record for an opening weekend in the United States and Canada.

The phenomenal success of the new Star Wars film confirms that the Walt Disney Co.’s 2012 acquisition of LucasFilm back in 2012 for a staggering $4 billion wasn’t such a high-priced gamble after all.

The Force Awakens crowd was also perhaps slightly older than may have been expected.

Overseas, “The Force Awakens” opened to $279 million as it played in every major market except China, India and Greece. There are probably plenty of repeat viewings happening among fans, but The Force Awakens may not have the staying power of Avatar or Titanic, the films that have the top two spots in both the domestic and worldwide box office charts.

Tomorrow is a key box office day as it will help determine what the film’s walk-up business will be.
