Martin Shkreli Arrested on Charges of Securities Fraud

Hours after the FBI arrested pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli on securities fraud charges this week, the bureau announced it does not have in its possession the only known copy of the Wu-Tang Clan album “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.”

By now, you’ve probably heard of Martin Shkreli, the enigmatic pharmaceutical entrepreneur who was arrested Thursday for securities fraud.

The charges are related to his actions before he founded Turing this year.

He pleaded innocent to the charges at his arraignment and was released on $5 million bond.

What’s more, many investors were shorting the stock – betting that it would fall – before Shkreli took control. A seven-count indictment unsealed in Brooklyn federal court Thursday charged Shkreli with conspiracy to commit securities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and securities fraud.

“I had two guys parked outside of his house for six months” watching him, Shkreli told the rap news site HipHopDX in a tough-talking, expletive-filled interview published Wednesday, the day before his arrest.

The 62-year-old drug is the only approved treatment for toxoplasmosis, a rare parasitic disease that mainly strikes pregnant women, cancer patients and AIDS patients. Ponzi victims do not make money, yet Mr. Shkreli’s investors enjoyed strong results. Shares of KaloBios plunged by close to 50 percent on the back of the reports and trading had to be halted in the shares.

On Friday, Turing said Shkreli had resigned as CEO. The Deerfield-based company has been calling for Turing to lower the price.

Reuters witnessed Shkreli’s predawn arrest at the Murray Hill Tower Apartments in midtown Manhattan. He founded Turin in February, and also became the CEO of KaloBios Pharmaceuticals in November.
