The woman, Sunita Kuwar (36), whose job was to cook the mid-day meals meals for the students in Kalyanpur government middle school in Barauli in Bihar’s Gopalganj district, was sacked under flimsy pretexts.

Sunita was hopeful, that after Rahul Kumar’s intervention she might get her job back, and that is exactly what happened. The DM asked her to rejoin her duty assuring full support from the authority.

And true to his word, Rahul Kumar helped her, but he also managed to dispel the superstitions of the villagers with a solid, cheeky response – he made Sunita cook for him and ate the meal in full view of the villagers.. According to media reports, Sunita said that she was being targeted because she was a widow. Despite DM’s permission, around 150 people stormed the school and forced both students and teachers out to prevent Sunita’s reinstatement. “Asked the same widow cook to serve me the meal”. This is a bad omen. Singh died three years after their marriage.

Commendation is pouring in from across the country and overseas for Rahul Kumar and his unique solution to counter the blind beliefs evident in Gopalganj – sentiments which are echoed in many villages in the interiors of India as well. While the world is looking at India as second super power, people in villages still believe in myths.
