‘Star Wars’ blasts opening weekend record with $238 million
Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke the opening weekend box office record. President Obama ended a news conference on Friday saying he needed to head to a White House screening of the movie, and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton closed Saturday’s Democratic debate saying, “May the Force be with you”.

ZIMBABWE was last week treated to the global phenomenon of science fiction in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, ahead of its United States release. By weekend’s end, The Force Awakens could soar past $245 million to lock down the biggest opening weekend ever, toppling the previous champ, Jurassic World’s $208 million opening, The Hollywood Reporter writes. Many hard-core fans wanted to see the first new “Star Wars” movie in a decade, and the first featuring original stars such as Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in 32 years, as soon as possible.
Over the past few days, the talk of the planet has been about Star Wars: The Force Awakens – and there are now box office numbers that truly prove just that. At the final count, the Chinese market accounted for $228 million of Jurassic World’s global total.
“It was bigger than a movie”, Dave Hollis, Disney’s distribution chief, said. The turnout for “Star Wars” is an encouraging result for Disney, rival media companies and cinemas.
Experts believe that the film is comfortably on target to smash all sorts of other records, too.
“The Force Awakens” now holds the box office records for biggest Thursday night opening, biggest one day gross, biggest December debut, and biggest opening weekend of all time.

Internationally, “The Force Awakens” made $279 million, that’s the third highest opening of all time behind “Jurassic World” ($316 million) and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2” ($314 million). Over the film’s first weekend in theaters, the Disney (DIS – Get Report) -produced seventh installment in the stupendously successful series beat Wells Fargo estimates of $225 million, earning $238 million in North America, good for the biggest debut ever.
