Jimmy Carter reveals he is cancer free

Dr. Douglas Johnson, a melanoma specialist at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, says typically patients have a scan every three months, for a year or two after a test showing no cancer.

That time, the former Democratic president announced that the cancer had spread from liver to brain.

Doctors not involved with Carter’s care said his medical team will perform regular scans of Carter’s brain and liver where cancer cells had been and they likely will check other parts of his body for any recurrence or new growth. He received treatment – which included radiation and a new drug, Keytruda, or pembrolizumab – at Emory Healthcare in Georgia. The FDA said the drug represented a substantial improvement over existing treatments. “For today, the news can not be better”, Lichtenfeld said. He will keep on receiving daily dose of pembrolizumab. Carter, his wife Rosalynn, his children, and the country are relieved about the good news. The disease is often accompanied by a poor prognosis, but experts said Carter appeared to have benefited from early detection.

Additionally, there is more hope the cancer won’t return with immunotherapy.

Cancer is a powerful disease that affects not only the patient, but the patient’s loved ones.

Despite being cancer-ridden, Carter has worked throughout his treatment.

Keytruda is an antibody created to disable the protein PD-1 so it can not do its job of keeping the immune system in check; this allows T cells to become more active in recognizing and fighting cancer cells. Perkins said that one in five patients treated with that drug, dating back to clinical trials, was alive many years later.

When Keytruda was approved in September 2014, it marked the beginning of the immuno-oncologic age.

American broadcaster NBC quoted Mr Carter as saying: “Went for an MRI this past week and they (doctors) didn’t find any cancer at all in the brain”. This week, that included a visit to his doctor to learn the results of an MRI brain scan.
