German church celebrates ‘Star Wars’ at a Sunday service

About 500 people packed into Berlin’s Zion Church for a special Sunday service meant to mark the release of the latest The Force Awakens blockbuster while drawing more young people into the holy house, Reuters reports.
“We recognised evident Christian themes”, Garve says.
“People know “Star Wars, ‘ but unfortunately they do not know the Bible so well anymore, but if you combine the Bible with ‘Star Wars” then you get people coming to church again”, said Lucas Ludewig, one of the clergy who conducted the service.

“It’s great that there are subjects that people are interested in”.

At the terracotta-brick Zion Church, an organist played the movie series’ theme and Ulrike Garve, a vicar in training, opened the Protestant service with the words “The wait is over – the Force has awakened!” “But for something like this, I’ll go”, he said.

Church leaders compared Star Wars to references in the New Testament of the Christian Bible of overcoming evil with good.
