Srnicek, who played over 150 times for Newcastle United, was back in his home country Czech Republic for Christmas when he collapsed while out running.
Shaka Hislop and Pavel Srnieck were some of the best known names to front up between the sticks for the Magpies in the last 20 years but sad news today reaches about the health of the Czech.
“They they will see if his heart is stronger and, if so, bring him out of the coma…no one knows if his brain has been too starved of oxygen”.
“He is in a critical condition in hospital and remains unconscious”.
Srnicek was a popular member of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers team and he has remained close to events in the North East with his weekly Sunday Sun column. “Get well Pav, praying for you”.
Sheffield Wednesday, for whom Srnicek made 44 appearances after moving to Hillsborough in 1998, added: “Sorry to hear the bad news on our former goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek”.
Srnicek also had brief spells with Portsmouth and West Ham, before he returned to St. James’ Park as cover for the 2006/07 season.

Srnicek retired from playing after his second stint at Newcastle in 2007, and took up a series of coaching roles in the Czech Republic.
