SC bans diesel-run SUVs to curb pollution in Delhi
The ban, which comes into immediate effect, will last until March 31, 2016.

Governments of UP, Rajasthan and Haryana shall take steps to ensure that commercial traffic for destinations other than Delhi use alternative routes.
It also put a restriction on the passage of commercial vehicles through Delhi if that was not their intended destination and emphasised that such vehicles would be prohibited from entering the city through the entry points of NH-8 and NH-1.
The court has also doubled the cess on entry of trucks in Delhi.
The court barred diesel trucks older than 10 years from entering the gridlocked capital, and banned the burning of rubbish because the toxic atmosphere reduced visibility and made breathing hard.
The courtroom had additionally slammed automotive producers which had knocked at its doorways towards the National Green Tribunal order banning registration of diesel cars in the capital.
During the three-hour-long hearing, the bench asked the counsel representing Centre and the Delhi government to come out with comprehensive long and short term plans to tackle the menace of air pollution. This the primary step from the apex court to curb the pollution in Delhi. It all started with the declaration of Odd-Even Policy of Delhi Government in which only odd numbered cars will be allowed on roads on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and even numbered cars will be allowed on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. This will reduce air pollution to a large extent is what the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court today has banned registration of diesel-powered SUVs and cars with engines over 2000cc in Delhi and NCR till March 31, 2016.
Over 23 percent of the cars on Delhi roads run on diesel which produces much more carcinogenic nitrogen oxide than petrol cars.
India’s courts are pushing authorities to act over Delhi’s filthy air, ranked as the world’s worst in a World Health Organization (WHO) survey previous year of more than 1,600 cities.
It also ordered for the diversion of commercial vehicles which are not bound for Delhi, specially trucks, which pass through the national capital on way to other destinations after finding them the major source of vehicular emissions in the city.

The ban will affect luxury auto manufacturers as well.
