Texas Grand Jury Refuses to Indict Anyone in Sandra Bland’s Death
He says the grand jury will meet again in January and consider whether to bring criminal charges against the State Trooper who started screaming at Bland during the arrest, in a dash cam video which pushed the case into the national conversation about the relationship between race and criminal justice.

After meeting for more than eight hours today, a Grand Jury failed to return any indictments in the case of Sandra Bland, CNN reports. “We know what we’ve been listening to in the media… but we don’t have any real evidence”. As reported, Bland was driving to her new home in Texas (she had accepted a new job at her alma mater, Praire View A&M University) from IL (where she was born and raised) and was pulled over by Encinia on July 10. Law enforcers claimed she was argumentative and uncooperative when they arrested her and charged her with assaulting a public servant. County officials said they themselves received death threats.
Coroners say Bland hanged herself at Waller County Jail but her family dispute the suggestion.
A grand jury also refused to indict Darren Wilson, the police officer who killed unarmed black teen Michael Brown, and Daniel Pantaleo, the officer who strangled black father Eric Garner to death on a Staten Island sidewalk for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes.
Grand jurors considered evidence collected by a team of five special prosecutors named by the county’s district attorney, Elton Mathis.
“Whether you like it or not, the Supreme Court has made it clear police are in charge at a traffic stop, and they can make anybody get out of the auto – driver or passenger – for no reason whatsoever”, she said.
Bland was then jailed, where she stayed for the final three days of her life.
Local officials have said she was not mistreated in jail.
