The senior Defense officials who confirmed that all six dead were Americans were not authorized to speak publicly.
Earlier, an Afghan official put the number of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation personnel dead at three, with another two wounded.
The Taliban, which has been waging an insurgency against the U.S.-backed Afghan government, claimed responsibility in an email to AP.
Bagram is one of the main bases for the 9,800 USA troops left in Afghanistan after worldwide troops ended combat operations a year ago.
Since then, the Taliban have staged a range of attacks in various parts of the country, including a deadly siege at the fortified Kandahar airport and military base that left 50 people dead, the beheading of seven civilians in Zabul province, and a suicide bombing at a guest house in Kabul that badly damaged the embassy of Spain. Gen William Shoffner, head of public affairs at NATO’s Resolute Support base in the Afghan capital Kabul. A convoy of US and Afghan forces was conducting a regular patrol of the base when a suicide bomber on a motorbike collided with their vehicle, according to Reuters.
Monday’s attack came as Taliban gunmen and government forces battled for control of a strategic district in the southern province of Helmand after it was overrun by Taliban insurgents, delivering a serious blow to government forces. American Special Operations forces have been drawn back onto the battlefield as Afghan forces have struggled against insurgent offensives that are threatening important population centers. USA and Afghan military leaders say they are expecting a hot winter, followed by a tough fight throughout 2016.
“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those affected in this tragic incident, especially during this holiday season”, Shoffner said in a statement.
Fierce fighting in the Sangin district was continuing after the insurgents took control late Sunday, said Mohammad Jan Rasulyar, Helmand’s deputy governor.

Ghani’s office said on Sunday that the president and the national security council were aware of the situation in Helmand. With NATO contributions, there are about 13,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan. The last Marines withdrew from Sangin in May 2014. To the extent possible, US forces minimize travel by road to avoid improvised explosive devices, favoring helicopter travel instead.
