Historic ‘Star Wars’ debut hands Disney another hit franchise
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” may rake in $528m in worldwide ticket sales over the weekend, Walt Disney chief executive Bob Iger said on Bloomberg TV today.

The film is set 30 years after the “Return of the Jedi” and stars familiar characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo.
$48.9 million – The film’s opening box office in the United Kingdom.
The Disney film opened in 4,134 theaters. But with so many people interested in seeing the new Star Wars film, there was little to nothing left for the rest of the films at the multiplex.
An audience member loses it as the projector failed Friday at a “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” screening in Hollywood.
The seventh instalment, which brings back Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher and introduces British actors John Boyega and Daisy Ridley as Finn and Rey, took a record $238 million (£160 million) in USA and Canadian ticket sales.
However, in some countries, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” didn’t perform as expected such as Japan, where there has been a large “Star Wars” following. Many anticipate the movie to be the biggest so far to ever hit, though that will come a little bit later as it will open in China on January.
Roughly 58% of the “Force Awakens” audience was male while 63% of the audience was over the age of 25, according to data shared by the studio. Disney made an effort to build buzz, placing 500 miniature Stormtroopers at the Great Wall and striking a deal to stream the six earlier “Star Wars” films through video service Tencent.
It will be a hard act to follow, not only by other films, but by its sequel, “Star Wars: Episode VIII” as well as the coming “Star Wars” anthology movies.

“The Force Awakens” now holds the box office records for biggest Thursday night opening, biggest one day gross, biggest December debut, and biggest opening weekend of all time.
