The Gandhis received bail on a surety of Rs 50,000 each and though the court made it clear it will not grant them exemption from personal appearances, the rejection of Swamy’s plea to restrain their foreign travel gave them a handle to declare victory outside. “Make no mistake about it”, said Kamal Nath, a senior leader as he arrived in court along with other senior members of the party.

Shortly after returning from the court, both the Gandhis accused Modi of seeking to bend his opponents and said they were not afraid and will fight back. “Our struggle for Congress policies in the interest of the poor will continue”, she said as party workers raised slogans of support.

“They were accused of appropriating properties of thousands of crores of rupees and court had taken cognizance and issued summons”.

The next court date is on February 20, 2016, when the court is expected to start hearing Swamy’s evidence before possibly filing formal charges.
