Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Monday that the PA plans to change its name on passports it issues to State of Palestine.
The Greek prime minister said that a resolution was needed for the Palestinian issue as it is “key” for peaceful developments in the Middle East.
Abbas, who arrived in the Greek capital on Sunday, December 20, will meet with President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday, December 21, and will speak at Greece’s Parliament on Tuesday, December 22. It comes amid an official visit to Greece by the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.
It urges the Greek government to “promote appropriate procedures for the recognition of a Palestinian state and every diplomatic effort for the resumption of discussions for peace” in the region, Voutsis added.
“Since you have good ties with us, ties that bind us, and you have good relations with Israel, I am sure that you can play a significant political role between the two countries”, Abbas told Tsipras on the first day of his two-day visit.
The UK, France, and the Vatican also recognize Palestinian statehood, but with restrictions, and are not legally bound to take any practical steps as a result of granting recognition.
