In September, Taliban blitzed northern Kunduz province, which had been largely peaceful, as coalition-trained Afghan forces retreated. Resolute Support spokesman Brig. A number of soldiers were also reportedly wounded.
The fall of the town to the Taliban would mark a symbolic victory 14 years after they were routed from the capital Kabul.
It was the largest attack on foreign troops in four months. The patrol was comprised of a joint Afghan-US contingent.
It comes a day after warnings that southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province was on the brink of falling to Taliban fighters, after intense battles between them and the Afghan Security Forces.
“The British and Americans bled to defend Sangin district and now Afghan forces are suffering the same fate”. There was no immediate information on casualties or damage. According to the AFP, “More than 4,000 Afghan soldiers and police were killed and over 8,000 wounded in the first half of the year, compared to 5,000 who lost their lives in the whole of 2014”.
But trapped residents said that roads to Sangin had been heavily mined by insurgents and soldiers besieged in government buildings were begging for food rations.
