Starz Receives Six Golden Globe Award Nominations
The 2016 Golden Globe nominees were publicized Thursday via live-stream this morning by Chloe Grace Moretz, Dennis Quaid, America Ferrara and Angela Bassett, and included some surprises, as well as some stars getting passed over that had been expected to get a nomination.

Carol, a lesbian romance set in 1950s NY has topped nominations for the Golden Globes, with Australian movie Mad Max: Fury Road competing against the Cate Blanchett film for the top honour.
-Original Score: Carter Burwell, “Carol”; Alexandre Desplat, “The Danish Girl”; Ennio Morricone, “The Hateful Eight”; Daniel Pemberton, “Steve Jobs”; Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto, “The Revenant”.
Steven Spielberg’s well-regarded Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies” received only one nomination for Mark Rylance’s supporting performance as a Soviet spy.
On Thursday, the streaming TV website picked up a best TV comedy nomination for its original series Casual.
One of the bigger surprises is the prominence of “The Martian” in the comedy/musical categories.
Swedish actress Alicia Vikander had a big day.
Carlow actress Saoirse Ronan and Kerry actor Michael Fassbender lead the charge in the Irish nominations, alongside Lenny Abrahamson who directed “Room“, which will be represented in three categories at the prestigious awards next January. “Casual”, on Hulu, shares the category with “Mozart in the Jungle” and “Transparent” (both on Amazon), “Orange is the New Black” (Netflix), and “Silicon Valley” and “Veep” (HBO). The film, which she co-wrote, also earned a nomination for best comedy or musical. Sylvester Stallone earned a well-deserved supporting nod for “Creed”, but star Michael B. Jordan was snubbed.
In an awards season that has so far failed to produce a definite heavyweight, Tom McCarthy’s acclaimed Boston Globe drama “Spotlight” came into the Globe nominations as the Oscar favorite.
Brie Larson, best actress nominee for “Room”: “Wow”.
On the other hand, some films and performers were shut out of key categories.
Spielberg wasn’t the only big-name director left off the Globes’ list. She was previously nominated for her roles in “Winter’s Bone”, “American Hustle” and “Silver Linings Playbook”.
One more thing: This year also saw a virtual whiteout among the Globe’s film acting contenders.
And Spotlight was perhaps too much of an ensemble piece for the Globes. Yet somehow Pacino finds himself with a nod for best actor in a musical or comedy (there’s that extra category problem again!).
Although most pundits were (rightfully) quick to point out the ridiculousness of who exactly makes up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, there’s no denying how much the Academy Awards nominations echo the Globes’. Also surging was Adam McKay’s starry finance farce “The Big Short“, which earned four nominations, including best picture, comedy, and nods for Steve Carell and Christian Bale.
Blerghhhhhh: Any nominations for “Youth”, a zero-star insult opening tomorrow, is horrendous. – Rami Malek on his family’s response to his nomination for best actor in a TV drama for “Mr. Robot”.
“‘Room” blew me away”, Schumer said.
Michael Shannon – Nominee for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture “99 Homes”: “I’m so grateful to be acknowledged by the HFPA for my work”.

– Picture, Musical or Comedy: “The Big Short”, “Joy”, “The Martian”, “Spy”, “Trainwreck“. The film was also nominated for best screenplay and the movie’s director, Tom McCarthy, received a nod. George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” was named best film by the National Board of Review.
