“Conversations of environment have been considering long, but for the last couple of years, its negative impact has been felt on normal human lives”. US, France and India have together taken this initiative.
The Prime Minister handed over the keys of the first electric battery run bus to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
Praising Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Mr Modi said that he was happy that the Minister who is known for his new ideas has come up with a good concept. He quoted statistics to underline how a diesel bus produces 300 kg carbon monoxide, 600 kg of nitrous oxide and 12 kg of particulate matter annually while electric bus is pollution free.
Elaborating further, Mr Modi said, “Second initiative is “solar energy”.
Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar was also present.
“There was an important initiative taken at Paris conference on climate change recently by the world leaders”.
The proto-type bus has been developed by KPIT, Pune with consultation with the Central Institute of Road Transport and the technology has been completely developed in the country.
Gadkari said a policy to promote environment-friendly ethanol, bio-diesel, gas and CNG will be announced in this Parliament session as most older diesel buses are running on BS-II and BS-III engines, which are seen as highly polluting. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras are already in the process of developing such Li-ion batteries.

The government is also making regulations for allowing Flex Fuel vehicles that give a choice to users to choose fuel. “We can bring this kind of bus for public transport through our “StartupIndia” and “StandupIndia” campaign”, PM Modi said while flagging off a lithium-ion-powered battery bus here.
