Kerry: Russia and USA can cooperate despite disagreements
US Secretary of State John Kerry is in Russian Federation at the request of the White House, with ending the Syrian conflict and countering terrorism dominating the agenda. Kerry will seek to prepare the ground for a third round of talks of world powers on Syria amid doubts over whether a meeting scheduled for Friday in NY will go ahead.

The outcome of Tuesday’s meeting was that there was enough common ground for other foreign ministers to gather at the United Nations on Friday to begin to design a political transition.
“Kerry, who will meet Putin later on Tuesday, told Lavrov: ‘Even when there have been differences between us we have been able to work effectively on specific issues'”. The US and allied nations want Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to leave office as part of a resolution in Syria, while Russian Federation opposes the move and says it is a matter for the Syrian people.
Russian Federation has been carrying out air strikes targeting ISIS positions in Syria, but the USA accuses Russian Federation of bombing moderate rebels. Ahead of the talks, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement complaining that Washington was not ready to fully cooperate in the struggle against Islamic State militants and needed to rethink its policy of “dividing terrorists into good and bad ones”.
Kerry’s talks with Putin will also delve deeper into details of a planned January 1 ceasefire in Syria, as well as Monday’s comments by Russia on supporting the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which has been fighting Russian- and Iranian-backed government forces.
Mr Kerry said: “Nothing would please us more than to solve the problem of Ukraine and move forward on the economic front”.
The Russian Foreign Ministry says the visit of the US Secretary of State has been organized at the urgent request of the White House.

Russia, the US, European and Middle Eastern countries agreed in Vienna last month on a two-year timeline leading to Syrian elections, but left many questions unresolved, most notably the fate of Assad.
