Turkey troops in Iraq, violation of global law

Turkey has recognised a “miscommunication” with Iraq over its recent deployment of troops to the Bashiqa military base in northern Iraq, its foreign ministry has said.

U.S. President Barack Obama has urged Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to pull troops out of Iraq, amid a row that has split key members of the coalition fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). He added that the overarching principle for the U.S. is that Iraq is a sovereign country, and foreign forces should only be there if requested by the government of Iraq.

On Tuesday, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the presence of Turkish forces in Bashiqa does not pose a threat to the territorial integrity of Iraq but represents a strong entity against terrorism.
