Star Wars 7 The Force Awakens
Ahead of its India release, which is slated for Christmas Day, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, the seventh episode of the “Star Wars” series, shattered numerous records around the world in its box office debut this weekend, ushering in a new era for the marquee franchise. China is the world’s second-largest film market.

On Thursday night, “Force Awakens” grossed $57 million in North American theaters, shattering the record of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, which opened in summer 2011 with an overnight of $43.5 million.
WHO’S LAUGHING NOW? Star Wars creator George Lucas, left, turned out his baby to the franchise’s new director, J.J. Abrams, and the results have been record-breaking.
“Considering how strong the slate was, how strong the slate is going forward – and how important the worldwide box office has been and continues to be, the movie sector is incredibly robust”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, an entertainment research company. That’s just one of the records that The Force Awakens box office numbers smashed into oblivion, and it seems bound to potentially smash a few more as well.
Filmgoers reveled in the return to the “Star Wars” galaxy, dressing as Jedi or Sith, carrying lightsabers and cheering when classic characters such as Princess Leia or Chewbacca appeared on screen.
However, “The Force Awakens” total does not include sales in China, where the movie won’t open until January 9. It earned only $13.4 million.
The latest film, which some analysts expect to gross more than $2 billion, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. Audiences awarded an “A” grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore.
There’s no denying that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will continue to rake in hundreds of millions, but only time will tell if it has the strength and endurance to climb to the very top of the box office charts.
The Force Awakens has its sights set on Avatar’s highest grossing movie record, which now stands at $2.8 billion in global sales.
