‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ shatters box office records
“It’s bigger than we thought it would be yesterday”, Iger, said Monday in an interview with Bloomberg TV’s Stephanie Ruhle and David Westin.

Internationally, the film brought in $279 million, bringing its global gross to $517 million – second only to “Jurassic World’s” global bow of $525 million.
“I would argue the two-year marketing campaign for “Star Wars: the Force Awakens” was flawless in its execution”, said Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis.
However, Star Wars didn’t fly alone this weekend.
The first “Star Wars” film in a decade recorded the biggest domestic opening in Hollywood’s history, collecting $238 million over the weekend in the United States and Canada.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has set a new box office record.
The Walt Disney Co. earnings destroy the previous opening record set by Universal’s “Jurassic World”, which drew $208.8 million this summer.
Roughly 58% of the “Force Awakens” audience was male while 63% of the audience was over the age of 25, according to data shared by the studio. Disney, which spent more than $200 million to make “Force Awakens”, also created intrigue by keeping the plot largely secret.
The worldwide totals are all the more impressive because “The Force Awakens” has yet to open in China, the world’s second biggest film market.
Fans of the franchise also came out in record numbers over the weekend to be introduced to new characters like Daisy Ridley’s scavenger Rey, Adam Driver’s villainous Kylo Ren, and John Boyega’s stormtrooper turned good Finn.

Analysts say the space saga could become the biggest-selling movie of all time, even if it does fail to top Jurassic World’s global opening figures. Star Wars: Episode III’s release there in 2005 only took in $9 million. The company has multiple “Star Wars” movies in the works and is expected to generate returns across other business segments including television, toys, video games and theme parks.
