‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Breaks Box Office Records
Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian, one of Hollywood’s best-known box office analysts, said the film’s opening night performance in the USA and Canada “portends a massive and potentially record-breaking opening day and weekend for the film”. That’s a new record, too: “Jurassic World” made $525 million globally when it opened.

“We’ve had our tickets for two weeks”, said Christi Cortese of Hendersonville, who attended the film premiere Thursday night dressed as Princess Leia.
“The Force Awakens”, which has had its legions of fans frothing at the mouth ever since its mooted release, has grossed at least $130 million worldwide since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden. Reviews turned out to be stellar (95 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes), as did early audience reaction, which gave the film an A CinemaScore. “The movie was spoiled and everyone in the theater went insane”, an audience member said.
“Star Wars” crossed the $100 million threshold on the strength of its Thursday night previews, which grossed an incredible $57 million – $13.5 million more than the “Harry Potter” finale. “Our record box office share of The Force Awakens demonstrates the ubiquity of Fandango and how consumers are utilizing our many conveniences, such as reserved seating and mobile ticket redemption, to enhance their moviegoing experience”.
“Force Awakens” is the seventh installment in the epic science-fiction franchise created by George Lucas in 1977. “Force Awakens” was No. 1 in every country where it played except South Korea and Vietnam.
The film has not yet opened in China, home to the the second-largest movie customer base in the world.
“Force Awakens” also had the biggest Friday of all time, with $120.5 million.
The cast includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o and Domhnall Gleeson along with original “Star Wars” stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.
The latest film returns to “a galaxy far, far away” some 30 years on from the action of 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
