The film smashed through the previous biggest global box office opening record, $524 million set by Universal Pictures’ “Jurassic World” earlier this year.
The movie is a critical hit as well, earning good reviews from almost all corners.
It set a bunch of other records, like the largest Friday, opening, and single days according to Box Office Mojo.
47% – Percentage of the box office total that came from 3-D screenings. And, interestingly enough, the crowd was pretty diverse, “About 58 percent of the audience was male”.
Back in 2012, Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion and brought the entire franchise under the company umbrella.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has crushed North American box office records with the biggest opening of all time. Force Awakens toys, clothing, home accessories and video games already pervade stores ahead of Christmas.
73 – Age of Harrison Ford, who plays the film’s iconic hero, Han Solo.
20 – Duration in hours of the “Star Wars” movie marathon that took place in theaters across the country last week.
“Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience, and director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and the Lucasfilm team have outdone themselves”, reads a press release from Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios.
