Panthers say players didn’t taunt Beckham with bat
One Giants source said the receiver was unnerved by the fact that one Panther carried a baseball bat onto the field during warmups, a bat that found its way into cornerback Josh Norman’s hands. And what I have seen in the last couple of games – the wagging of the tongue, the nonsense in the end zone, the me me me stuff – to me, it all boiled over yesterday in one of the worst, worst performances and completely me, self-aggrandizing, nonsensical, just unsafe at times performance by Beckham yesterday.

The NFL listed the suspension as being for “multiple violations of safety-related playing rules” and NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks ruled Beckham put opponents at unnecessary risk of injury in a letter to the Giants receiver. Which means that the Giants will say all the right things – but they’ll ultimately do nothing, since it will be virtually impossible to do anything good the rest of the way without Beckham on the field for Sunday night’s game. “The efficiency of the offense”, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said after his team clinched a playoff berth, “is the best it’s been since we’ve been here”. If you want to play, let’s play it straight up, let’s do it the right way…
Even before the Giants hired Coughlin in 2004, he was well-known around the National Football League as a disciplinarian whose motto was, “if you’re not five minutes early, you’re late”. “This is a 22, 23 year-old kid, this is not a bad kid”.
Beckham was not ejected from the game, though many believe he should have been. “He couched his rationale in the” education” of Beckham, but it was his survival instincts that trumped everything else on Sunday. I have learned it all throughout my life you know.
“And secondly”, he said, “there’s a young player that’s being educated that, quite frankly, is an excellent football player”.
Coughlin had said he strongly considered benching Beckham, at least for a spell, so the receiver could cool down.
So what happened? With Norman clearly under his skin, Beckham launched his head through the side of Norman’s helmet.
Beckham was caught up in a week’s worth of attention hyping his matchup with Norman, magnified by what he perceived to be a hostile pregame environment, and he came charging out of his corner foaming at the mouthpiece, hunting a first-round knockout.
The Giants now must win both their remaining games, against the Minnesota Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants need to win their final two games and have Washington lose its final two to win the NFC East title.
“He has great energy, great enthusiasm, he gives great effort”.
Now, with the season and possibly his career on the line, Coughlin has a fine line to walk.

“I will not defend his actions yesterday because they were wrong and this franchise and organization does not tolerate that”, Coughlin said. But I will defend the young man and the quality of the person.
