Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)Authorities are attempting to rescue more than 100 people who were aboard a ship caught in rough seas off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

At least four people were rescued from the boat that capsized on Saturday in eastern Indonesia, Xinhua quoted head of search and rescue office in South Sulawesi, Roki Asikin, as saying on Sunday.
Police said the patrolling boats have been dispatched to look for the boat that is believed to have gone underwater 12 miles away from the destination.
3 people have been confirmed dead and 39 rescued, but search teams have so far been unable to locate the stricken ferry, more than two days after it sent out a distress signal.
“(The boat) may be upside down now”, Azikin said.
But he said the boat carrying 108 passengers and 10 crew members has not been found after it was hit by a storm near the Bone Strait.
When asked whether the boat had sunk, South Sulawesi police spokesman Frans Barung told reporters: “Maybe yes, maybe no”.
He said waves of up to three metres in height and strong winds had hampered efforts to find survivors during the day. Police and rescue authorities denied these reports and said it was still afloat, but with a broken engine and out of radio contact.
Searchers also found an inflated life raft with emergency supplies drifting in the sea with no people on it, he said.
“The ship had 122 people on board”.
Rescue boats were headed out to the scene but were not expected to reach the vessel until Sunday morning, local time, due to the choppy water.

The Indonesian archipelago, composed of more than 17,000 islands, is heavily dependent on ferry services, but the industry has a poor safety record and fatal accidents are common.
