“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” hits several box office records
The Force has topped Harry Potter as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took in $57 million in opening Thursday-night preview shows in the US, setting its first box office record. Its ability to profitably exploit “Star Wars” across all its divisions was the justification for Disney’s $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm LLC in 2012. Disney’s carefully planned release of film trailers and information over several months also boosted sales, he said. Force Awakens has collected $517 million so far globally, reports CNN, which lags behind Jurassic World’s $525 million, though the former hasn’t yet opened in China.

Overseas, The Force Awakens set a record for the highest-grossing opening weekend at the USA and Canadian box office with an estimated US$238 million (NZ$354m) in sales, industry monitor Rentrak said. However, the numbers for The Force Awakens may not all be in yet, and it wouldn’t be hard for the movie to get pushed over that record by the time the weekend is over.
So now what? Just as it was hard to predict The Force Awakens’ opening weekend, it’s also hard to predict what it’ll do from here.
“The Force Awakens” is only the third movie in history to open at over $200 million, besides its immediate rival “Jurassic World” and “The Avengers”.
After just three days in the market the film has overtaken the entire lifetime totals of the first “Hunger Games”, “Amazing Spider-Man 2”, “Prometheus”, “The Martian”, “Transformers” and “Fast & Furious 6”. Through Friday, worldwide ticket sales had reached $129.5 million, as the movie set opening-day records in Britain, Germany, Australia, Brazil and other countries.
The early figures suggest “The Force Awakens” is on course to exceed the record domestic opening of “Jurassic World”, which debuted with $208.8 million in June.
“I’ve loved doing the Star Wars films with all their fanfares and flourishes”, says Williams in a press release.
