However, that number could change when Disney releases the final tally later today.

The numbers for “The Force Awakens” are also unprecedented for a film premiering in December.
Thousands joined a mock lightsaber battle in Los Angeles, where an Australian couple married in line for the film.
We won’t spoil any of it for you, but Colbert’s segment on what you need to know about Star Wars is brilliant and hilarious – see it below. “Somebody asks him “wait, what did you do when you were here?’ and he says ‘I was in sanitation”, which is amusing in the movie but somebody pointed it out to me on Twitter”. “This is a huge, huge win”.
“It’s bigger than we thought it would be yesterday”, Iger, said Monday in an interview with Bloomberg TV’s Stephanie Ruhle and David Westin.
Disney’s $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm is likely looking like a good deal in light of the film’s performance.
Much is at stake for the Walt Disney Co., which, in 2012 paid $4.1 billion for production company Lucasfilm, largely for the “Star Wars” franchise. “Disney has this down to a science”. Regardless there’s no way this doesn’t finish above Jurassic World’s $652.3 million domestic total to claim the number one spot over 2015.
The Force Awakens may not be a flawless movie but it is a ideal experience. Furthermore, not only can The Force Awakens surpass any of these three films, this is only the first of the (currently) five confirmed Star Wars related films. Theatres added showtimes to meet demand. “Force Awakens” toys, clothing, home accessories and video games already pervade stores ahead of Christmas.
Worldwide, the movie reported $517 million in ticket sales by Sunday.
The film also had the biggest Thursday preview gross, at $57 million, and was the fastest to ever reach the $100 million and $200 million benchmarks.

Audiences gave the new release an A grade, and an A-plus among women and younger audiences, according to polling firm CinemaScore. This occurred in the ArcLight theater in Hollywood, one of the hundreds of theaters where the long-awaited film was finally played. Forty-two percent of the weekend’s domestic audience was female, Disney said.
