State Troopers say in addition to the deaths, 10 people were taken to the hospital and several others were treated on scene by paramedics.
One of the three people dead was possibly a truck driver who stopped on the side of the road to help, reported KSLA.
About the same time as the first southbound collision, three commercial carrier trucks collided in the northbound traffic lanes directly across the highway median from the southbound crash scene.
In all, ten vehicles were involved including a truck carrying large glue containers.
The exact number of fatalities is unconfirmed at this time.
Trooper Gravier says the second set of crashes on the northbound lanes may have been caused by drivers watching the backup from the first crash.
Traffic has been redirected to U.S. Highway 71 near Fouke. Arkansas State Police say there are initial reports of fatalities but details are still being confirmed.
